BECOME A BETTER SPEAKER

You are probably wondering how to become a better speaker…

Read on to find out!

Our progressive training is the key to preparing and delivering a memorable speech.  Of the various training supports made available to club members, the most important of these is The Speakers Guide, which is made available to every member on joining.  Ten basic assignments are detailed, to be completed step by step at your own pace – see below.  Each assignment is designed to improve a particular aspect of speaking and the first sections give general advice on how to prepare and deliver a speech.

Members are encouraged to work through the first ten assignments with the support of the Club Education Director.  Members who wish to stretch their abilities even further can then move on to the Advanced Assignments – see below.

Basic (F) Assignments

  1. Starting Your Journey
  2. Constructing a Speech
  3. Speaking with Conviction
  4. Using Gestures & Body Language
  5. Using Your Voice

Do not feel pressured to complete these basic assignments to an extremely high standard – once you complete these, you can automatically move on to the next basic assignment. The evaluators will be picking out the positive points from your speech and point out where you can improve in future.

Once these assignments are completed, you will have achieved your Foundation Certificate of Achievement.

Advanced (A) Assignments

  1. Vocabulary & Word Pictures
  2. Storytelling & Narrative
  3. Using Humour
  4. Developing Audience Rapport
  5. The ‘Showpiece’

These assignments require more thought and practice. The ‘Showpiece’ assignment (A5) is there to tie up your existing skills and techniques developed from the previous 9 assignments.

Once these assignments are completed, you will have achieved your ASC Certificate of Achievement.

Advanced (D) Assignments

  1. The Impromptu Speech
  2. Speaking to a non-ASC Audience
  3. Using Presentation Aids
  4. Giving a Lecture
  5. Making a Business Presentation
  6. Speeches for Occasions
  7. Speaking Without Notes

To achieve the Diploma in Public Speaking, members must complete the 3 assignments in bold as well as a further 2 of the assignments in italics.
